The RDI Background
The Respiratory Dental Institute was created to assist both medical and dental colleagues, via online education programs to better understand areas of clinical management of their patients.
The Institute will provide up to date education in the area of Dental Sleep Medicine. The Teaching modules are presented only by experienced clinicians in their specialist area. The first training programs we have invited A/Prof Michael Stubbs and Dr Linda Schachter to present.
Relevant Journal publications will be provided on the ‘What’s New Notice Board’ and available to all, on this webpage. Articles will be updated based on interest and relevance to the training program.
Certificate in Dental Sleep Medicine
This is a 12 module program that will teach dentists and health care workers the principles of diagnosis and treatments for patients with snoring and sleep apnoea problems.
This training program includes teaching from both A/Professor Michael Stubbs an Oral Medicine Specialist, and Dr Linda Schachter, Specialist Respiratory and Sleep Physician.
Both colleagues are experienced clinicians, and both teach these areas in Australia and treat patients.
Aim of this Teaching program is for Dentists at the completion of the
Certificate in Dental Sleep Medicine be able to:
- What treatments are used for patients with Sleep Apnoea and Snoring
- Step by step procedure to make a Mandibular Advancement Splint for your patient
- What special clinical features do you need to consider when both selecting the type of Mandibular Advancement Splint and how far the mandible needs to be advanced
- How do you use a George Gauge?
- Virtual Clinical observation with A/Prof Michael Stubbs in the application of this knowledge when he treats his own patients
- Understand the principles of different types of sleep disorders
- How these conditions can be recognised
- Questions to ask your patient in the clinic
- Clinical features to consider when assessing your patient
- How these conditions can be diagnosed via a sleep study
Advanced Certificate in Dental Sleep Medicine
The aim of this Teaching program is a 12 module program that will teach dentists more detailed information in the interpretation of sleep study results by Respiratory and Sleep specialist, Dr Linda Schachter. Important considerations in selecting the ideal treatment for patients with snoring and sleep apnoea problems.
The Advanced Dental Sleep Medicine program will provide advice on how to deal with any complications when treating your patient with a Mandibular Advancement Splint, and provide a number of clinical cases for you to learn from. You will then be assessed on your answers to the cases in order to ensure your better understanding of the principles and management of patients to provide you confidence when treating your own patients

Platinum RDI Membership
This exclusive opportunity is only available to colleagues that have completed the Introduction and Advanced training programs.
Membership at this level enables you to interact with A/Prof Michael Stubbs or Dr Linda Schachter by submitting a clinical case and then receiving answers to your questions regarding that patient case.
Membership to this Platinum level will be on an annual subscription fee.
RDI Master Class
A/Prof Michael Stubbs and Dr Linda Schachter offer Preceptorship opportunities in their own specialist clinics in Melbourne. You can select a one day class or a week class.
This opportunity is available to colleagues that have completed the teaching modules in order to ensure basic training and knowledge is understood before attending their specialist clinics where they treat
patients.
