Program Overview

With a combination of some of the leading experts in sleep medicine from around the world this course not only brings you top quality content from latest research but takes you through a multitude of real life cases. As you work through these case studies you will begin to understand more about the nuances of treating patient suffering from OSA.

This course is more than just applying the theory you’ve learnt at introductory level, you will leave this course understanding treatment requirements for different diagnosis of sleep disordered breathing and how to better work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You will finish this course one step closer to becoming qualified to diagnose and treat your patients for snoring and sleep apnoea.

Entry requirements and course prerequisites

The program is aimed at dentists, orthodontists, dental hygienists, Maxillofacial specialists and Oral Medicine specialists with an interest in providing advanced care to patients with sleep disordered breathing pathologies. 

  • Certificate in Dental Sleep Medicine course or equivalent as assessed by the admissions board
  • Participants of the Advanced Certificate course must have successfully completed the Certificate course or have equivalent qualifications.
  • In order to qualify for the Fellowship program participants must have completed the Certificate and Advanced Certificate in Dental Sleep Medicine
  • To be eligible for the ongoing mentoring program you must have completed at least the Certificate in Dental Sleep Medicine or equivalent.

Case Studies 6 hours content

 This section of the course will vigorously test your knowledge in the field. You will need to practically apply your knowledge through a problem based learning approach. You will be tested on a number of diagnostic and therapeutic parameters, asked to interpret results and create treatment plans for real life patients.

Learning Outcomes

Treating different levels of sleep apnea, assigning appropriate therapies for different levels of sleep apnea, treating snoring, different types of diagnostic testing and what they indicate, CPAP, APAP, BiPAP, central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, TMD, bruxism, UARS, troubleshooting complex cases, overcome challenges with mandibular advancement devices, CPAP intolerant patient and MAD intolerant patients.

This course is focused on learning outcomes and as such we have focused on helping you understand how to treat REAL LIFE PATIENTS.

Linda
Linda Schachter

Dr Linda Schachter has been a Sleep and Respiratory Physician for 25 years with an interest in snoring, sleep apnoea, nocturnal hypoventilation and the diagnosis and treatment of all sleep disorders, obesity and workplace fatigue. She has a long-term research interest in the effects of obesity on sleep apnoea and asthma and the effects of weight-loss on these conditions.

Linda also runs an Australia wide home diagnostic sleep service and supports many groups in trying to get optimal sleep care for patients in the community. She is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, Australasian Sleep Association, American Sleep Association, American Thoracic Society, the Obesity Society of Australia and New Zealand and a clinical committee member of the Australian Sleep Association (ASA).

Michael Stubbs

Associate Professor Michael Stubbs is an Oral Medicine specialist trained with both specialty Masters degrees in Oral Pathology (University Adelaide) and Oral Medicine (University of Melbourne). Michael also holds a Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons; Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia and The Australian and New Zealand Academy of orofacial Pain.

Oral Medicine is the dental specialty in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with facial and jaw pain that is not derived from the teeth; oral mucosal diseases and he has a particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep apnoea/snoring disorders, using of custom-made dental devices.Michael is regularly invited to speak within the areas of Oral Medicine both nationally and internationally.

The modules are all self paced and split into smaller micro-modules so that you can spend as little or as much time on the course at anytime that you like

Every month we have a Q and A online with one of our lecturers where you can ask questions before and during the session. These run for 90 minutes and include a brief update or a case study of a real life patient.

Knowledge will be assessed in a number of different ways. 

Each module has a short quiz at the end. These are multiple choice and short answer.

Some modules include practical assignments where you will perform practical exercises within your clinic. You will be given all the tools you need to undertake these assignments.
